Artocarpus heterophyllus

Description

Bark is greyish-brown, rough, uneven, somewhat scaly. All living parts of the tree exude copious, white gummy latex. Leaves are 4-25 x 2-12 cm, obovate or oblong, leathery, bluntly tipped, glossy, usually glabrous, arranged alternately on horizontal branches, and spirally on ascending branches. Adult leaves are entire, sapling leaves are sometimes lobed. Stipules are fused around stem, leaving an encircling scar after they fall off. Short, stout flowering twigs emerge from the trunk and large branches, or even from the soil-covered base of very old trees. Male and female flowers are in separate inflorescences, which are oblong or rounded 5-15 cm long clusters bearing many densely crowded tiny flowers. Fruit is a gigantic syncarp, 20-90 cm  long and 15-50 cm wide, barrel- or pear-shaped, pale or dark green when young, greenish-yellow, yellow or brownish when mature, glabrous, with short hexagonal fleshy spines. The fruit consists of hundreds of fruitlets, which are the true fruits, 4-11 x 2-4 cm, composed of fleshy yellow or orange aril and the seed. The seed is light-brown, oblong or oval, about 4 x 2 cm.
