Growing form
Perennial grass.
Size
30–70 cm high.
Stem
The culm is erect and smooth.
Leaf
The leaves are alternate, sessile and sheathed. The basal leaf-sheaths are reddish or brown. The lamina of floral shoots are short, and the lamina of vegetative shoots are long. The lamina is moderately wide (2–6 mm), compressed, smooth and green. The ligule is distinct and 1–5 mm long.
Flower
The inflorescence is a lax, spreading, 3–15 cm long, conoidal panicle. The spikelets are flat-lenticular, quite sizable (3–5 mm), lustrous golden brown, three-floreted. The two lowest florets are staminate and the floret at the summit is bisexual. The glumes are as long as the spikelet. The margin of the lemma is dense-pubescent. The awn is robust, rough, about 1 mm long and begins slightly below the apex of the lemma.
