Growing form
Densely cespitose, perennial grass.
Size
15–40 cm high.
Stem
The culm is erect, thin and smooth.
Leaf
The basal leaf sheaths are of varying heights, sallow or brownish. The leaves are alternate, sessile, sheathed and distinctly shorter than the culm. The lamina is filamentous, very narrow (0.3–0.6 mm), scabrous and opaque gray-green. The ligule is negligible.
Flower
The inflorescence is a narrow, 3–5 cm long panicle. The spikelets are rather small, 4–6 mm long, and light green or maroon. The branches are triangular. The spikelets consist of 3–6 bisexual florets. The glumes are short, acute, and of different lengths. The lemma is relatively long, 3–4 mm, scabrous at the apex and short-aristate. The awn is 0.6–1.5 mm long.
