Growing form
Erect, perennial herb.
Size
15–50 cm high.
Stem
The stem is stout, erect with a distinct hollow cavity in the middle inside the stem.
Leaf
The stem is foliate. The distal leave reaches the inflorescence. The leaves are ascending or spreading. The lamina is compressed or keeled, and maculate with purple-brown spots or without any spots.
The bracts of flowers are dark red with nearly smooth margins.
Root
The root tubers are deeply lobed.
Flower
The inflorescence is a dense spike with many flowers. The flowers are smallish, zygomorphic, purple-red and dark-mottled. The labellum deflexed, narrow, nearly simple, spurred and the margins are revolute. The length of the spur is 3/4 of the length of the ovary.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is a capsule. The seeds are minuscule, dust-like.
