Citrullus lanatus

Description

Stem is hairy with branching curly tendrils in the leaf axils. Leaves are triangulate-ovate, pinnately-lobed, 8-20 × 5-15 cm, hairy. Flowers are solitary, axillary, pale yellow, 2,5-3 cm in diameter. Glabrous fruit is a large spherical to oval berry that is typically green with darker mottling or striping. Over 1200 cultivars now exist, producing fruits of up to 60 cm in diameter depending on the variety. The fruit has a firm outer rind (exocarp), a white inner rind and a sweet, juicy edible pulp (mesocarp and endocarp) that is red, pink or yellow with imbedded black to brown seeds (seedless varieties are also available).
