Leaf

Leaves consist of a stem-clasping sheath at the base and very large, spreading, leaf blade. Arranged spirally, blade narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptical with a point at the tip. Narrow at the base.

Flower

Red, yellow or occasionally red and yellow, showy. Singly or in pairs, arranged into larger branched clusters (with 6-20 flowers) at the tips of the flowering stems.

Fruit and seed

Oval or rounded papery capsules crowned by sepals. Verrucose to begin with. Numerous smooth, black, hard, relatively large, round or egg-shaped seeds.
