Growing form

Perennial herb.

Size

40–150 cm high.

Stem

The stem is simple – branched in the upper part, maroon and dense-pubescent at least at the summit.

Leaf

The leaves are opposite and short-petiolate. The lamina is palmatipartite with 3–5 lobes – digitate. The lobes or leaflets are lanceolate and coarsely serrate.

Flower

The capitulescence is paniculiform. A capitulum is about 7 mm long. The phyllaries are rounded, hyaline at the margin, red and arranged in two rows. The ray-florets are absent. The 5–6 disc-florets are tubular and reddish.

Fruit and seed

The fruit is a pentagonal, gray-brown – black achene that is about 3 mm long. The pappus is villous.
