60–120 cm high.

The stem is erect, simple, obtusely angular – nearly terete, and nearly glabrous. The rhizome is short.

The flowers are first erect and eventually slightly drooping. The flowers are bisexual. The calyx, corolla and androecium are five-leaved. The calyx is connate. The lobes are narrowly lanceolate and eventually spreading. The corolla (35–60 mm) is connate, campanulate and purple (rarely white). The ovary is inferior and contains 2–5 locules. The style is pubescent. The stigma is trilobate.
