Growing form

Herbs, some saprophytes and weak wooded shrubs; often square stem.

Leaf

Leaves: opposite or whorled, simple; margin entire; almost sessile, petiole bases ±joined across the node; no stipules; bitter taste.

Flower

Bisexual. Flower: symmetric bell-like; 4-5 sepals calyx persistent; 4-5 fused petals, corolla lobes right-contorted; 4-5 (-10) stamens; ovary superior.

Fruit and seed

Fruit a dry capsule with many minute seeds.
