Growing form
Perennial, semelparous herb.
Size
50–120 cm high.
Stem
The stem is erect, smooth, hollow, purplish at the base and reddish near the summit. There is a septum inside the nodes.
Leaf
The leaf arrangement is spiral. The leaves are petiolate. The sheath is large and expanded. The lamina is deltoid, two or three times imparipinnate. The leaflets are carnose, coarsely serrate – lobed. The terminal leaflet is trifid.
Flower
The inflorescence is a compound umbel with 20–40 globose umbellets. The involucre consists of 1–3 caducous bracts. The bracts of the involucels are linear, deflexed and about half of the length of the pedicels. The pedicels of the umbellets are glabrous. The flowers are bisexual and actinomorphic. The corolla is five-leaved. The calyx is reduced. The petals are white – greenish, bifid and involute at the apex. There are five stamens and a pistil with two stigmas in a flower.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is an ellipsoid, two-sectioned, low-ridged schizocarp that is 5–6 mm long and has unpleasant odor.
