Growing form
Typically an annual, over-wintering herb.
Size
20–50 cm high.
Stem
The stem is erect, green, hirsute, and branches above the midway of the stem. Large individuals are multiple-branched with ascending stems.
Leaf
The basal leaves are ternate. Occasionally, the middle leaflet is trilobate, or the lamina of the whole leaf can be imparipinnate with five leaflets. The leaflets are lanceolate, coarsely serrate and green on both sides
Flower
The inflorescence is a panicle. The calyx and corolla are five-leaved. The flower is subtended by an epicalyx (an epicalyx consists of the connate stipules of the sepals). The petals are 4–5 mm long and yellow. The sepals are initially about 5 mm long, but enlarge to about 10 mm long when the fruits have matured.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is an achene with a short beak.
