Growing form
Perennial herb.
Size
20–50 cm high.
Stem
The rhizome is lignified, decumbent and rooting. The stems ascending or erect, pubescent, and often reddish.
Leaf
The petiole is short, and the distal leaves are nearly sessile. The lamina is imparipinnate with 2–3 pairs of leaflets. The leaflets are 3–5 cm long, lanceolate, dentate, green on the adaxial side, light gray on the abaxial side, sericeous.
Flower
The inflorescence is a few-flowered panicle. The flower is subtended by an epicalyx which is formed by connate stipules of the sepals. The sepals are maroon and 10–15 mm long. The petals are black-red and persistent. There are numerous stamens and carpels in the flower. The receptacle is dark red, consists of spongy tissue and swells after flowering. The receptacle is not fleshy.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is a short-beaked achene.
