Growing form

Deciduous shrub.

Size

0.1–1.5 m high.

Stem

The stems are erect, ascending or decumbent. The stems and branches are unarmed. The bark is maroon and sheds off in long strips in the direction of the axis.

Leaf

The leaf arrangement is spiral. The leaves are stipulate. The stipules are persistent. The lamina is imparipinnate with (3–)5(–7) leaflets. The leaflets are simple, linear – linearly elliptic, entire, typically pubescent above when young, and silky beneath at least along the veins. The terminal leaflet is occasionally obtuse.

Flower

The flowers are solitary or in a panicle. The flowers are uni- or bisexual, actinomorphic and with an epicalyx. The calyx and epicalyx are typically five-lobed. The corolla is five-leaved, 2–3 cm wide, and typically yellow or rarely white or yellowish red. There are many stamens and carpels in a flower. The receptacle is wide, gibbous and pubescent.

Fruit and seed

The fruit is a short-beaked, pubescent achene.
