Scleranthus annuus

Growing form

Annual or biennial herb.

Size

5–25 cm high.

Stem

The stem is grayish or yellowish green, and procumbent or ascending.

Leaf

The leaves are opposite, exstipulate, connate at the base, acicular, fimbriate at the base and 6–13 mm long.

Flower

The inflorescence is a dichasium. The flowers are bisexual. The corolla is absent. The calyx is five-lobed, green and connate with the gynoecium. The lobes are acute with a narrow hyaline margin. There are two styles in the gynoecium. The ovary is almost inferior. The bracts extend above the coflorescences.

Fruit and seed

The fruit is an achene with a single seed.
