Growing form

Perennial, typically rather stout herbs.

Size

25–80 cm high.

Stem

The stem is robust, branched 2–3 times. There are scale-like leaf sheaths without a lamina at the base of the stem. The sheaths wither later on.

Leaf

There are one or two basal leaves. The lamina is 4–10(–20) cm wide, reniform to orbicular, cordate at the base, typically entire, but rarely trifid, coarsely dentate with numerous teeth of equal size.

Flower

The pedicels are glabrous. The flowers are 2–4 cm wide, golden yellow. Occasionally some of the petals are only partially developed. The receptacle (5–11 mm) is densely pubescent.

Fruit and seed

The achenes are 2–3 mm long, densely pubescent. The beak is 1.3–2 mm long and straight.
