Growing form

Ferns of variable sizes (20 cm to over 5 m). The leaves generally form a dense rosette, but in some species the leaves can grow indefinitely and then they look like climbers.

Leaf

Leaves are typically rather hard in texture and either pinnatifid or once or more times pinnate. Often there is obvious leaf dimorphism, such that the fertile leaves are much narrower than the sterile ones. In some species, the leaves are able to grow indefinitely, and then they can become many meters long and scramble over the other vegetation.

Sporangium

Sporangia are arranged in linear sori on each side of the midvein of a leaf or pinna.
