Origin and general distribution
The origin on E. crus-galli is not known for certain, but it is likely native to some of the warm parts of Asia and/or the Mediterranean region. Today, the species is almost cosmopolitan: naturalised everywhere from the tropics to warm-temperate regions, and as a casual alien all the way up to the Arctic Circle. In Europe, the species is reported as having become established as far north as southern Scandinavia and Estonia. In Finland, there are hundreds of reported observations of E. crus-galli (further information is available on the species’ own species card), but it has so far been unable to establish itself outside the greenhouses of some market gardens.
Rough barnyard grass (E. muricata) is native to North America, where its native range extends up to the southern parts of the south-eastern provinces of Canada. Little is known about this species’ invasive range and degree of establishment in various parts of the area, but reports of rough barnyard grass have been recorded in western parts of Europe (France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, established at least in corn fields and riversides) and Ukraine, as well as Finland. In all, the total number of confirmed sightings in Finland is now (in 2015) around 80 (more information is available on the species’ own species card).
The chart shows temporal distribution of the observations, which is not the same as population increase/decrease.
