The species is legislated to be nationally invasive alien species (National list of alien species)

The group water frogs (Pelophylax) is included in the national list of invasive alien species. The group refers to frog species that are not native to Finland.

Invasive alien species may not be released into the wild, imported into Finland from outside the EU or from other EU countries, transported, transferred, bred or cultivated, disposed of, passed on, sold, marketed, or otherwise handed over.

Invasive alien species refers to species that have been inadvertently or intentionally introduced by humans outside the species' natural range. Species naturally spread to Finland, for example, as a result of a warmer climate, are invasive species, and the provisions on invasive alien species do not apply to them.
