Hukkavaellusyökkönen on alkuperältään trooppinen ja subtrooppinen laji, joka on levittäytymässä pohjoiseen. Lajilla ei ole Suomessa pysyvää kantaa, koska se ei pysty talvehtimaan Suomessa ulkona. Kasvihuoneista laji on hävitetty sen saapuessa taimiaineiston mukana.
