Origin and general distribution
Taudinaiheuttaja on kuvattu ensimmäisen kerran perunan lehdistä Pohjois-Amerikassa 1882 nimellä Macrosporium solani. Sieni osoitettiin perunan taudinaiheuttajaksi 1890-luvulla Australiassa ja Pohjois-Amerikassa, jossa se aiheutti tuhoja erityisesti ilmastoltaan lämpimillä perunantuotantoalueilla. 1890-lopulla myös A. alternata-sienen osoitettiin olevan yhteydessä lehtipolteoireisiin. Euroopassa Suomi mukaan lukien tautia on esiintynyt yleisesti ainakin 1900-luvun alkuvuosista lähtien, mutta sen merkitystä on pidetty hyvin pienenä 2000-luvulle asti. Tauti on yleistynyt 2000-luvulla etenkin Manner-Euroopassa. 2010-luvulla taudista on tullut vakava ongelma myös pohjoisimmilla perunantuotantoalueilla.
