Origin and general distribution
Lajin alkuperäinen levinneisyysalue USA:ssa on Suurten järvien alueelta itärannikolle. Euroopassa lajia on havaittu luonnonvesistä Saksassa ja Ranskassa Reinin alueella eri osissa laajaa jokireittiä. Laji menestyy Keski- ja Etelä-Euroopan olosuhteissa, mutta kylmyys rajoittaa menestymistä Pohjois-Euroopassa. Ilmaston lämpeneminen muuttanee tilannetta ja levittäytyminen pohjoisille alueille voi olla tulevaisuudessa mahdollista.
