Origin and general distribution
Otettu viljelyyn hedelmällisen puolikuun alueella Lähi-idässä, missä kasvaa edelleen luonnonvaraisena. Allotetraploidi risteymä, joka on syntynyt erään länsiaasialaisen vehnälajin (Triticum urartu) ja turkinpukinvehnän (Aegilops speltoides) risteymänä. Viljeltiin varhain esimerkiksi Egyptissä, Euroopassa ja Intiassa, mutta viljely alkoi taantua jo pronssikaudella. Vakiintuneena tulokkaana eri puolilla maailmaa.
