Description

Stems are 5-12 cm in diameter, the base occasionally with a swelling to 30 cm high and 40 cm in diameter, occasionally with 1-2 small branches. Internodes are 2-12 cm long, yellowish or pale grey-brown, more distally green to grey with waxy white coating. Leaves are 5-11, pinnate, spiral or more often arranged in three rows, upright, strongly arching. Leaf sheaths are yellowish with white waxy coating. Petiole is 19-37 cm long, channelled, yellow or yellowish orange. Blade is 1-2 m long with 44-59 leaflets on each side of the rachis. Inflorescence is spreading, up to 110 cm long, with spreading branches, branched to 3 orders. Peduncle is 30-90 cm long, flattened, partly covered by a tubular prophyll (a modified leaf) and a pale brown, waxy deciduous bract. Staminate flowers have rounded sepals ca. 2 mm long, ovate and acute petals ca. 3.5 mm long partly joined with the receptacle, 6 stamens with the filaments 2.8 mm long, and a sterile pistil (pistillode). Pistillate flowers have orbicular or broadly ovate free petals 2-3 mm long, very short staminodes (sterile stamens) and ovary ca. 3 x 1.4 mm, with short stigmas. Fruit is yellow, ellipsoid to obovoid, 12-18 mm long, with a pointed apex and long-fibrous endocarp. Seed is ovoid with an obtuse apex and a pointed base, 11-16 mm long.
