Afrikansormihirssi Eleusine coracana

Description

Stems are erect or semi-erect, slender, glabrous and smooth, sometimes branching, rooting at lower nodes. Leaf sheath is flattened, overlapping, split along the entire length; ligule 1–2 mm long, fimbriate; blade linear to linear-lanceolate, up to 75 cm × 2 cm, usually folded, rough above. The inflorescence is a panicle with 4-19 finger-like spikes that can be up to 24 cm long. The spikes bear up to 70 alternate spikelets, each carrying 4 to 7 seeds. Seed is more or less globose, up to 2 mm in diameter, white, red, brown or black. There is large morphological variation between the cultivated lines of finger millet.
