Origin and general distribution

E. guineensis is indigenous to the humid tropics of West and western Central Africa. Oil palm is cultivated in tropical Asia, Africa and America. The cultivation is essentially limited to regions between 10°N and S. It can be found up to 1300 m in elevation near the equator.
