Origin and general distribution

Genus Abelmoschus is native to the old world tropics. A. esculentus is a cultigen of uncertain origin. Truly wild populations are not known with certainty. Okra is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions around the world between latitudes 35-40°S and N, and up to 1000 altitude in the tropics.
