Origin and general distribution

G.hirsutum and G. barbadense are from the New World. G. arboreum and G. herbaceum are from the Old World. G.hirsutum is widely cultivated throughout the tropics and subtropics, from 47°N to 32°S, and from sea level to ca. 1500 m in the tropics.
