Koponen, T., Ignatova, E. A., Kuznetsova, O. I. & Ignatov , M. S. 2012: Philonotis (Bartramiaceae. Musci) in Russia. — Arctoa 21: 21–62.: "Another problem is P. caespitosa, hardly separablefrom P. fontana by morphology, especially from the underdeveloped male plants of the latter species, with similar habit and lamina areolation. These species can be easily separated if male plants are at hand, because theyhave different inner perigonial leaves (acuminate in P.caespitosa vs. mostly obtuse or shortly acute in P. fontana). Unfortunately male plants are rarely found in P. caespitosa. - - our molecular data support the species status for P. caespitosa"
