Origin and general distribution
Otettu alun perin viljelyyn hedelmällisen puolikuun alueella Lähi-idässä, missä kantamuoto esiintyy yhä luonnonvaraisena. Kantamuotonsa emmervehnän tapaan allotetraploidi risteymä, joka on syntynyt erään länsiaasialaisen vehnälajin (Triticum urartu) ja turkinpukinvehnän (Aegilops speltoides) risteymänä. Jalostettu Lähi-idässä ja Euroopassa pronssikaudella viljellystä emmervehnästä. Kasvaa vakiintuneena tulokkaana eri puolilla maailmaa.
