Origin and general distribution
S. indicum originated in India. Sesame seed is one of the oldest oilseed crops known, domesticated well over 3000 years ago. Records from Babylon and Assyria, dating about 4000 years ago mention sesame. Sesame occurs mainly in tropical and subtropical climates between 25°S and 25°N, but up to 40°N in China, Russia and the United States, 30°S in Australia and 35°S in South America. It is grown from sea-level to 1500 m.
The chart shows temporal distribution of the observations, which is not the same as population increase/decrease.
