Origin and general distribution

R. communis is indigenous to north-eastern tropical Africa. It was already grown for its oil in Egypt some 6000 years ago and spread through the Mediterranean, the Middle East and India at an early date. It is now widely cultivated in drier areas of the tropics and subtropics and as an annual in many temperate areas with a hot summer.
