Origin and general distribution
Groundnut is indigenous to South America. It is an ancient crop widely grown in Mexico, Central America and South America in pre-Columbian times. Archeologists have dated the oldest specimens to about 7,600 years, found in Peru. The place or places of domestication are uncertain. Groundnut is grown in most tropical, subtropical and temperate countries between 40°N and 40°S latitude. It can be grown up to 1500 m altitude in the tropics.
The chart shows temporal distribution of the observations, which is not the same as population increase/decrease.
