Hietalaukka Allium vineale

Growing form

Perennial bulb.

Size

20–100 cm high.

Stem

The plant is arhizomatous. The bulb is ovoid. The stem is terete.

Leaf

The leaves are distinctly petiolate, early-withering, linear, 1.5–4 mm wide, terete, typically slightly canaliculate and hollow. The highest leaf is often above the midpoint of the stem. There is one bract on the stem, and it is shorter than the pedicels – as long as the inflorescence, broad and obtuse.

Flower

The inflorescence is 2–5 cm wide, dense and hemispherical. The pedicels are 0.5–3 cm long. The perianth is campanulate. The tepals are 2–4.5 mm long and pink or rarely white. The anthers are as long or longer as the perianth. The innermost anthers have two long teeth. Occasionally the flowers are absent. There are numerous or only few tawny bulblets. The bulbils are small and ellipsoid.

Fruit and seed

The fruit is a capsule, 3–3.5 mm long. Seeds seldom develop.
