Karhunlaukka – Allium ursinum

Perennial bulb that often forms extensive, continuous stands.

15–40 cm high.

The plant is arhizomatous. The bulb is long, narrow and white. The stem is triangular in cross-section.

There are two or three leaves at the base of the stem. The leaves are distinctly petiolate. The size of the lamina is 10–20 cm x 3–4 cm, and it is lanceolate and compressed. The petiole has rotated half a turn around its axis. There are 1–3 bracts that are shorter than the inflorescence and caducous.

The inflorescence is a 2.5–6 cm wide, dense, terminal umbel without bulbils. The pedicels are 10–15 mm long. The inflorescence consists of 6–20 flowers. The perianth is 1 cm wide, star-shaped, white and fragrant.

The three-furrowed capsule is 3–4 mm long.
