Growing form
Perennial herb with latex.
Size
30–100 cm high.
Stem
The stem is erect, typically simple, obtusely angular, and glabrous. The rhizome is horizontal and short.
Leaf
The basal leaves senesce before flowering. The basal leaves are nearly apetiolate. The petiole is alate with a narrow thin ridge. The lamina is narrowly obovate. The cauline leaves are arranged spirally, and they are exstipulate, simple, lanceolate to almost linear, crenate with shallow notches. The proximal cauline leaves typically have a short petiole and the distal cauline leaves are sessile.
Flower
The inflorescence consists of 2–10 flowers, occasionally of a single flower. The flowers are bisexual with a five-segmented calyx, corolla and androecium. The calyx is connate. The lobes are triangular. The corolla (30–50 mm) is connate, widely campanulate, blue (rarely white). The lobes are shorter than their width. The ovary is inferior, with 2–5 locules. The style is pubescent. The stigma is trilobate.
Fruit and seed
The capsule is erect, thick-veined, slightly pubescent, poricidal (dehisces via small holes), dehiscent at the summit.
