Growing form
Perennial herb.
Size
20–50 cm high.
Stem
The stem is erect, typically simple, angular, glabrous and hollow. There is a septum inside a node.There are brown scales at the base of the stem.
Leaf
The leaf-arrangement is spiral. Most of the leaves are at the base of the stem. The leaves are overwintering and long-petiolate. The base of the petiole is sheath-like. There is typically a single leaf on the stem. The lamina is orbicular – deltoid and (three- to) five-lobed. The lobes are narrow at the base, toothed and occasionally lobed further.
Root
The rhizome is short, thick and slightly creeping.
Flower
The inflorescence is a compound umbel. The umbellets are capitate. The umbels and umbellets are subtended by few-leaved involucres and involucels. The flowers are bisexual and actinomorphic. The calyx and corolla are five-leaved. The petals are white – reddish and involute at the apex. The flower bears ten stamens and a pistil with two stigmas.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is an elongate, two-sectioned schizocarp that is about 5 mm long and covered with prehensile barbs.
