Origin and general distribution

Soya bean was domesticated in North China 3000 years ago. It reached Europe before 1737. Soya bean was introduced into the United States in 1765, into Brazil in 1882 and into Africa most likely during the 19th century. It is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and temperate regions throughout the world from the equator to latitudes 53°N or 53°S, at altitudes from close to sea level up to 2000 m.
