Tarhapapu Phaseolus vulgaris

Description

Phaseolus vulgaris has a well-developed taproot, with many lateral and adventitious roots bearing nitrogenous nodules. Stem is angular or nearly cylindrical. Leaves are alternate, trifoliolate, green or purple. Petioles are up to 15(-30) cm long, grooved above, distinctly thickened at base (amarked pulvinus). Leaflets are ovate, entire, acuminate, 7.5-14 cm × 5-10 cm, entire, slightly pubescent, 3-veined from the base. Stipules are triangular to lanceolate, ca. 4 mm. Inflorescence is an axillary or terminal raceme up to15(-35) cm long, shorter than leaves, with few flowers. Bracteoles are ovate, usually as long as calyx or slightly longer, persistent. Flowers are bisexual, papilionaceous. Calyx is cup-shaped, 3-4 mm. Corolla is white, yellow, violet, or red, standard 9-12 mm wide, wings obovate, keel ca. 1 cm with spirally twisted apex. Ovary is pubescent. Fruit is a linear legume up to 20 cm long, straight or more commonly curved with a prominent beak, fleshy when immature, green or yellow, sometimes red, purple or with purplish stripes, usually 4-10-seeded. Seeds are globose to kidney shaped, ellipsoid or oblong, 0.9-2 × 0.3-1.2 cm, white, red, brown, purple, yellow or black, often variegated, without endosperm.
