Origin and general distribution

The most recent research suggests that the genus Amaranthus originated in the Americas, where domestication of several species occurred thousands of years ago. Amaranths were major cereal crops of the Aztecs and earlier American civilizations. Amaranthus is a cosmopolitan genus with the greatest diversity in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions.
