Origin and general distribution

Suomessa viitasammakkoa tavataan lähes koko maassa. Pohjoisin havainto on Ivalosta. Pohjoisessa viitasammakko on kuitenkin eteläosia huomattavasti harvalukuisempi, kun taas Keski-Suomessa se voi olla jopa sammakkoa runsaslukuisempi. Aivan tarkkaa käsitystä levinneisyydestä ja runsaudesta on kuitenkin vaikea saada, sillä levinneisyyskartoitukset perustuvat suuresti tavallisten luontoharrastajien tekemiin havaintoihin, eivätkä monet havainnoitsijat osaa erottaa viitasammakkoa sammakosta.
