Sulkakoipikorentoja tavataan Länsi-Euroopasta Japaniin, Kaakkois-Aasiaan ja Australiaan sekä Saharan eteläpuoliseen Afrikkaan ulottuvalla alueella. Heimon lajit puuttuvat kuitenkin Euroopan ja Aasian kylmimmistä osista, ja lajien esiintymistä koko levinneisyysalueella rajoittaa myös sopivien lisääntymispaikkojen esiintyminen.
