Origin and general distribution
Marbled crayfish reproduce by parthenogenesis. The species was first discovered in the German pet trade in the 1990s. It is regarded as a subspecies or as sharing the lineage of the `slough crayfish´, Procambarus fallax. The species is found in the wild in Florida, but no native populations of the marbled crayfish are known. Marbled crayfish have been found in natural waters in Germany, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Madagascar and Japan. These are presumably escapees from aquariums. Although the majority of records from Europe are of single specimens, several populations of marbled crayfish are known to exist in natural waters.
The chart shows temporal distribution of the observations, which is not the same as population increase/decrease.
