Origin and general distribution
Lumihanhi pesii arktisella tundralla Pohjois-Amerikassa ja Koillis-Siperiassa. Se on pesinyt Suomessa vuosina 1982-1984 sekä 2000-luvulla Hailuodossa (Valkama ym. 2011), mutta Suomessa havaitut yksilöt on todettu olevan varmoja tai lähes varmoja häkkikarkulaisia (Velmala ym. 2020).
Esiintyminen Haliaksella
Haliaksella lumihanhi on havaittu vuoden 2020 loppuun mennessä kahdesti; ensihavainto 1.6.1998, jolloin kaksi vaaleaa yksilöä viihtyivät hetken paikallisina aseman alueella (BirdLife Suomi 2018), ja toinen havainto 23.5.2013, jolloin yksi ”sinihanhi” oli hetken paikallisena (Rissanen ym. 2013).
