Origin and general distribution
Floating pennywort is native to the New World, widespread from South America to British Columbia and the northern parts of the United States, and apparently also in the Old World in tropical Africa and Yemen. It is present as an alien species in Australia, Asia and Europe. In Europe, the species became established in the UK in the 1980s and in the Netherlands and Belgium in the 1990s. In addition, it is present in France, Ireland, Italy and Germany. Its spread to other Central European countries is also feared. Floating pennywort has been acquired as an ornamental for tropical aquariums and garden ponds.
The chart shows temporal distribution of the observations, which is not the same as population increase/decrease.
