Accepted name, Mammal Species of the World 2005

Sivertsen (1954) and Scheffer (1958) considered Neophoca congeneric with Phocarctos. However, it was retained as separate by King (1960, 1983), Rice (1977), Barnes (1989), and Wynen et al. (2001).
