Van Gelder (1978) included Alopex, Atelocynus, Cerdocyon, Pseudalopex, Lycalopex, Dusicyon, and Vulpes as subgenera, however, this arrangement is not currently employed by most mammalogists (Berta, 1987, 1988; Corbet, 1978; Corbet and Hill, 1980; Gromov and Baranova, 1981; Hall, 1981; McKenna and Bell, 1997; Wozencraft, 1989).
