Subgenus Artibeus. Distinct from jamaicensis; see Handley (1989), Brosset and Charles-Dominique (1990), Lim and Wilson (1993), Marques-Aguiar (1994), and Simmons and Voss (1998). This species has often been referred to as fuliginosus in the literature, but obscurus is a senior synonym; see Handley (1989).
