Accepted name, Mammal Species of the World 2005

S. boliviensis species group. Originally separated from S. sciureus by Hershkovitz (1984); not recognized as a species by Thorington (1985) or Costello et al. (1993), but belongs to a different species group according to Groves (2001c).
