Origin and general distribution
Palmuripsiäinen on alun perin kaakkois- aasialainen hyönteislaji. Nykyään sitä esiintyy suuressa osassa Aasiaa, Tyynenmeren alueella, Pohjois-Afrikassa, Australiassa, Keski- ja Etelä- Amerikassa sekä Floridassa. EU:n alueella palmuripsiäistä on tavattu harvoin, ja esiintymät on saatu hävitettyä. Suomessa palmuripsiäisiä ei ole tavattu viljelmiltä.
