Origin and general distribution
Tauti lienee peräisin Siperiasta, missä se olisi kehittynyt yhdessä sembramännyn kanssa. Laji levisi Eurooppaan ilmeisesti sembran mukana jo 1800-luvulla – ensimmäiset havainnot ovat Baltian maista 1800-luvun puolivälistä. Amerikkaan vietiin runsaasti Euroopassa kasvatettuja strobus-männyntaimia 1800-luvulla ja niiden mukana tauti levisi Amerikkan. Suomessa tautia esiintyy vähän.
